Our morning excursion is to Punta Cormoran. The beach there has green, grey sand and a lagoon with one pink flamingo. 













Just past the lagoon is a lovely beach and Darwin shows us how to spot (and not step on!) stingrays disguised in the sandy, shallow waters. Overnight, we sail away from Isla Santa Cruz and anchor in Gardner Bay off Isla Espanola. From the boat, I can tell we are in for a treat. Pale blue water and pure white sand littered with sea lions and pups. 

It's a glorious morning to stroll along the beach and watch the mums tend to their young. They are the sweetest things ever.

Guayaquil. Definitely not my cup of tea. At the risk of sounding like a spoilt brat, I’m already missing the beach. And the shabbiness of Ecuador's largest city is just not doing it for me. 
The street food is weird and bland, and the hostels are grubby, basic and expensive. 


There is a festival on this weekend in Guayaquil but no one knows, or wants to tell us, about it.

At first glance, we have an American couple with a son, Chris (26) and daughter, Casey (22) who are travelling with an English couple and their ten year old son, Eric. It is a narrow, rocky road with mountains on one side and a sheer drop on the other. It has earned its name because of the number of deaths from cars, buses and trucks going over the side.

Over that time we learn that he is one of 29 children, his father is just about to turn 103 and has had ten wives in his lifetime. Rambo tells us that his dad smokes a pipe with home-grown tobacco but only eats food produced on his farm. Yesterday we arrved in Ushuaia, Argentina where our Antarctic trip leaves from. Our hostel overlooks the channel where the boats sail out to the Antarctic. On one side is Chile and the other side is Argentina. It is beautiful. 

It's 10 degrees here. 4 degrees on Friday predicted. But given it's only a two and half hour ferry ride from Buenos Aires, I'm not sure why.

It doesn't take much to make a backpacker happy... a decent shower (if it's hot even better), comfy bed and an edible breakfast usually does the trick. WIFI and a friendly front desk are a welcome bonus.

They range from simple hand painted papier-mâché masks to ornate masks decorated with feathers, gems and globs of glitter. We found some pretty cool ones but figured that Australian customs wouldn’t like the feathers – and that was before we found out the price.

At takeoff from Auckland airport we timed how long it would take to reach our final destination - Olinda, Brazil. A 12 hour flight to Santiago, a five hour stopover and a six hour flight to Rio de Janeiro via Sao Paolo. Am not an Acca Dacca fan by any stretch of the imagination but a 60-something year old Angus Young was amazing and they seriously rocked. 35,000 people at Wellington stadium on Thursday night, most pumping their fists in the air to the music, had a pretty good time.

I actually thought that I was quite organised but the number of things to do before I left the country was ridiculous. I arrived in NZ at 2:30pm and was ready for bed. Big Day Out the night before and some last minute packing meant that I had about two hours sleep. I arrived at Nicole's exhausted. Slept a massive 13 hours.
